FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Guru Labs courses cover which distributions?
A: Guru Labs targets the latest versions of distributions released by Red Hat and Novell/SUSE. This includes both the enterprise versions and the "enthusiast" versions. These distributions are Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora Core, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and SUSE LINUX Professional. For some courses we have separate student manuals for the Red Hat family versus the SUSE family (such as the GL250) and for other courses (such as the GL120, GL314, and GL550) we have a unified manual. This is why, when you register for class, we ask which distribution you want to use in class.  See which exact versions we currently support.

Q: Do you have good instructors?
A: Our instructors have been carefully picked for their real world experience and abililty to convey complex technical topics in a manner easy to understand and follow. There are many, many system administration professional that know Linux and security topics but few can teach and convey those topics to students. Likewise, there are many quality instructors that lack the experience and depth of technical topics on Linux specifically.

Guru Labs instructors are active participants in the open source community and make many contributions to various projects. They have a contagious enthusiasm for Linux and technology in general.

Our instructors are friendly people and solid communicators with exceptional technical skills.

Q: Why should I choose Guru Labs Linux training instead of some other organization?
A: At Guru Labs, Linux is our passion. The company was founded during the last millennium by active participants in the Linux community specifically to offer Linux classes. We are not hopping on the bandwagon, we helped build the wagon.

Since we are not owned by a Linux distributor we are able to offer unbiased training without any pressure to toe a company line or upsell other products.

Our students tell us the top reasons they love Guru Labs training are:
  • Great "Guru" Instructors
  • Un-matched topic coverage with real-world, in-depth labs
  • Excellent student manuals that double as reference manuals with an index and a table of contents
See our main training page for more infomation and links to data that supports these claims.

Q: Are your facilities good?
A: Yes, top notch. Each classroom is equipped with modern computers with 2.8Ghz+ CPUs and easy to read 19" displays connected to a switched network. High-end, bright projectors are mounted in the ceilling and project onto the center of generous 30 foot wide white boards. The student desks were custom fabricated to our exact specifications and have power and cabling internally routed for a mess free environment. Each classroom has it's own independent heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system for comfort.  Check out photos of our classrooms.

We have a large break-room with free soda pop and drinks, popcorn, and coffee. Light refreshments are served in the morning and part way through the afternoon.

We are close to the SLC airport and share a parking lot with an economical, yet nice hotel with free high speed internet.

Q: What Internet and phone access do you provide?
A: We have a full point-to-point T1 for our Internet connection. All the student computers have connectivity to the Internet, and we also have a wireless access point that is usable by all students. We have a phone in our lobby that can be used to make and receive phone calls.
